In 1998 parents of students, and other members of the community began to discuss concerns for how the tradition of excellence in education at Washburn Schools is being threatened by statutory mandates and spending caps. These individuals, all with an interest in the quality of education in Washburn, began to create a dream, a dream that would allow for maintaining a high quality of education in our community.
In 1999 the Washburn Community Education Foundation was established with a mission to promote educational excellence by strengthening and increasing community participation in the educational process. The foundation would provide financial support for creative and innovative programs beyond the formal funding responsibility of the school district. A Board of Directors was formed and strategies were developed to accomplish the mission including to:
- - Encourage innovative learning programs
- - Foster creativity in teaching and scholarship
- - Help students develop special talents
- - Provide opportunities for teachers to pursue professional development in new and innovative ways of instruction
- - Create diversity in teaching strategies
- - Increase opportunities for learning experience outside the traditional classroom
- - Support programs that enhance critical thinking skills - Recognize quality staff and programs
- - Provide avenues of community involvement
A thriving Washburn Community Educational Foundation will enrich and stimulate our community’s most important resource: our youth. We invite you to become a part of this dream. Please consider giving Washburn a generous gift of your time, ideas, and financial resources.
